What sorts of tests or scans will I need to investigate my back pain or spine problem?

Back pain is a common complaint among many people, and it is often associated with the spine and surrounding tissues. When it comes to investigating the root cause of back pain and spine problems, it's important to know that not everyone needs a whole battery of investigations. At The Spine MDT, we offer a one-stop spine clinic that allows us to identify the cause of the problem as soon as possible, saving you the hassle and cost of multiple tests.

Back pain

Often a concise history and examination by a Sine MDT recognised practitioner is enough to determine the underlying cause. If any tests requested, they are there to confirm the suspected diagnosis.. As a spine surgeon from a neurosurgery background, who has also carried out a combined neurosurgical and orthopaedic spine fellowship, I am able to determine if any investigations are needed and if so, I can usually narrow down the tests to one.

Examination by a Sine MDT

If the assessment demonstrates signs and symptoms of nerve compression, I usually recommend a MRI, but occasionally request a CT or some plain X-Rays if instability of the spine is suspected. These tests can provide a more detailed look at the structures of the spine and help to identify any abnormalities, such as herniated discs, spinal stenosis, mis-alignment of the spine or degenerative disc disease. At The Spine MDT, we have partnered with a few imaging centres where we can offer these tests as part of a package.

Imaging tests

However, not everyone requires imaging tests. In fact, studies have shown that the vast majority of people with back pain do not need an MRI or CT scan. In some cases, the physical examination alone is enough to identify the cause of the pain, and treatment can begin immediately. I have partnered with a team of recognised practitioners of other disciplines of spine care, including physiotherapists, osteopaths, chiropractors, and pain specialists who work together to provide the most effective treatment plan for your specific needs.

Another test that may be recommended is a bone scan, which can help to identify any abnormalities in bone density (e.g. osteoporosis or osteopenia), which may be contributing to your back pain. At The Spine MDT, we offer comprehensive bone scans to ensure that we identify any underlying conditions that may be contributing to your symptoms.

Investigate certain spine or nerve conditions

In some cases, more specialized tests may be necessary to investigate certain spine or nerve conditions. For example, if you are experiencing symptoms of nerve pain but the scan and the history are not completely in-keeping with nerve compression, I may request nerve conduction studies carried out by a neurophysiologist to identify other causes. This is carried out with electrodes placed in the muscle and skin to electrically stimulate the nerve and measure its response.
